On Sunday, June 17, 2018, in Lewisburg TN, Thomas Henry McVearry passed away
peacefully at the age of 94 after complications from a rare neurological disorder known
as Multiple System Atrophy.
Thomas “Mac” McVearry was born on February 28, 1924 in Washington, DC. Dearly
loved by all who knew him, close friends and family called him Tim or Uncle Tim. He
attended Eastern High school and was a lifelong Washington Redskins football fan. A
journeyman electrician by trade, he was a long-time member of the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. His passion was woodworking. Children and animals
held a special place in his heart.
During WWII he was a machinist at the Navy Yard, then moved on to the Railroad
where he worked at the Washington Terminal in DC. He began his career in the
General Services Administration as an electrician at the Interior Department. He
became Assistant Chief of the Interior Group and was soon detailed to the Secret
Service’s security operations where he provided technical support for the protection of
Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter, as well as Vice Presidents Humphrey and
Agnew. In 1979 he retired as Assistant Buildings Manager for the GSA White House
Group.
Mac met his wife, Alice Irene Lasky, in 1961 at the Interior Department where they both
worked, Mac in buildings maintenance for the GSA and Alice a secretary for the
National Park Service. They were married in 1963 and lived in their Rockville MD home
for 50 years before a 4-year stay in Florida. The couple had just moved to their new
home in Lewisburg TN when he passed.
Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, DC Police Detective Sgt. Thomas Michael
McVearry and Emma Marie Wienecke McVearry; also by his sisters Emma DeSimone
(Salvatore) and Dorothy Latona (Richard). He is survived by his wife Alice of Lewisburg
TN; daughter Anita Kirby of Margate FL; son Charles Alan (Sherri) of New Market MD,
and two grandchildren Rachel and Jordan also of New Market. He will be fondly
remembered by his nieces Donna Griffis (Jim) daughter Dawn and their son Chad;
Lynda Crawford (John) and their children Tony, Nick, and Tiffany; nephew Michael
DeSimone (Barbara) and their sons Chris and Scott; as well as nephew Stephen Latona
(Mary) and sons Mike and Bill. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Nancy Quade and
nephew Ronald Hargrove of Lewisburg TN.
Thomas’ cremains will be interred next to his parents in the Cedar Hill Cemetery family
plot. To celebrate Thomas’ life a memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 19,
2018, at 1:00 p.m. in the Mausoleum Sanctuary at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 4111
Pennsylvania Ave, Suitland, MD 20746. Memorial donations in his name may be made
to the Villalobos Rescue Center, 4525 N Claiborne Ave, New Orleans, LA 70117.
