In the small town of Hazel Green, Alabama, on July 10, 1937, a baby girl named Thelma Mae Spray was born to James David and Effie Spray. The eldest of four children, she was lively, energetic, and independent. She made the decision to accept Christ into her heart at the young age of fifteen which became the foundation of her life. She met and eventually married Clifton Roberts on November 26, 1955. They went on to have three children, who gave her great joy. Both she and her devoted husband adored each other, bringing each other great joy and humor throughout their marriage.
She walked through this life a loyal follower of Christ. She was a charter member of Parkview Baptist Church in Lewisburg, and loved her Lord with a passion that was reflected throughout her life. She kept an immaculate home and never failed to provide for the needs of her family before her own. She was employed by Genesco, Kantus, and in her retirement years, worked at the Marshall County High School cafeteria. There, the children affectionately called her “Granny”. She loved to read, paint, and spend time with her great-grandchildren. She never ceased being a mother to her children, even as they became adults with children of their own. The love she shared with her family was a blessing.
Thelma joined her Lord and Savior on July 18, 2020, in the presence of her family at home. Preceding her in death were her parents, James and Effie Spray; her beloved husband, Clifton Roberts; and brother, Butch Spray. She leaves behind her children: Carol (Ray) Troup of Morristown, TN; Janice (Mike) Strawbridge of Cleveland, TN; and Len (Rebecca) Roberts of Lewisburg TN; Grandchildren: Elizabeth (Tyler) Hall, Emily and Erica Troup, Scott (Megan) and Will Strawbridge, Jordan (Karen) Roberts, Bailey (Greg) Lumpkin, and Hannah Blevins; Great-grandchildren: Aaron and Harper Hall, and Oliver Lumpkin; Brother: David (Eloise) Spray, Sister: Katherine (Bill) Hobbs, Sister in law: Joyce Spray.
