Robert Moss

October 9, 1917 — November 7, 2008

Robert Henry Moss

Florence, SC- Heaven opened it's gates today to another true believer with his peaceful passing. An honest Christian and true southern gentleman, he was greatly loved and will leave a dark void to a great many family members and friends and former business associates.
Mr. Moss died November 7, 2008. Born October 9, 1917 in Lewisburg, TN he was the son of the late Joe Fussell Moss and Effie Mae Hendrick Moss whose families were early settlers of Marshall County, TN.
As a young man he worked in his father's department store, Murrey-Moss Co., where he learned merchandising and the art of serving the customers. He attended the University of Tennessee and began his career with JC Penney Co. in 1941 in Chattanooga, TN. That was interrupted by World War II during which he served in the U.S. Army. Upon his return from service he resumed his career at the Chattanooga store and subsequently worked in management of Penney stores in Augusta, GA and Lumberton, NC, and then moved to Florence to manage the downtown store. In 1967, he opened the JC Penney store at the Florence Mall. After his retirement he worked in real estate for a number of years with McInnes Realty.
He was a lifelong member of the Lion Club and in later years a member of Golden Kiwanis.
Throughout his career, he loved serving the people with his warm, comfortable style. One highlight of his career as a young merchant was meeting Mr. J.C. Penney whom he admired, founder of the company.
On November 4, 1939, he married "my life's joy" Adelaide Moore in Petersburg, TN, whom he first saw when she shopped in his family's store. They were married 69 years. Their home was filled with love for each other, their family and friends. He was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church for 51 years having served as deacon and elder.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a great appreciation for the beauty of nature and wildlife. Bob was an enthusiastic University of Tennessee sports fan. He loved to share with his friends and family object lessons he had learned from his life experiences. Throughout his life he loved retuning to the family's home on the farm in Tennessee for family gatherings. His love for the hills of middle Tennessee was no secret to all who knew him. Bob had a heart for helping those less fortunate than he, always having a sympathetic ear for someone in need.
He survived by his wife of 69 years, Adelaide Moore Moss; daughter, Carolyn M. Wolfe and her husband, Joe; sons, Robert Henry Moss, Jr. and his wife, JoAnn; and Dr. Joseph David Moss and his wife Kristen;
