Mary Lewis

October 17, 1914 — July 1, 2008

Mary Elizabeth Woodyard Lewis died on July 1, 2008 in Vienna, WV. A former resident of the Lewisburg area, Mary was born on Oct. 17, 1924, in Charleston, W.Va., to J.C. and Mary A. Kirby Woodyard. She spent her youth in the Armor Park section of South Charleston, graduating from South Charleston High School in 1942. She went on to attend Marshall College University, earning her bachelor's degree in 1945 and master's in 1948. Upon graduation, she taught high school for two years before she went to work at Columbia Gas. She married O. F. Pinky Lewis of Charleston in 1958. The couple relocated to Brownsville, Texas, in 1961 with Union Carbide, where they raised their family. Retirement took them to Lewisburg, Tenn., where Pinky preceded her in death in 1986. Mary relocated to Bella Vista, Ark., in 1998 to be near her son and again to Vienna in 2001.While living in Lewisburg, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Mary always enjoyed her crossword puzzles, knitting and her vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed working with her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth in recording her family history. She had a great passion for reading almost any type of book. In later years, she became a world traveler, visiting behind the Berlin Wall before its fall as well as traveling to Europe, Alaska and Hawaii. Above all else was her love for her family and friends.

Mary will be sadly missed by her son, Philip and his wife, Elizabeth Lewis; granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Rebecca of St. Clairsville, Ohio. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who cared for Mary in her years in Lewisburg.

There will be a graveside memorial service at Lone Oak Cemetery for Mrs. Lewis on Saturday, September 6th at 10 a.m. All friends are invited to attend.

Bills-McGaugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
