Madelyn Hufstedler Shelton

Madelyn Hufstedler Shelton, age 103, of Lewisburg, died on December 11, 2019 at NHC
Oakwood Hall in Lewisburg.

Mrs. Shelton was a native of Linden, Tennessee and the daughter of the late Samuel Boyd and Cora Hufstedler.

Madelyn attended Martin Methodist Callege and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. She taught school for 32 years in Houston and Marshall Counties. She was a long-time member of Lewisburg’s First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, a former member of the Study Club and a charter member of the Marshall County Art Guild.

In 2002, she was named Marshall County’s Outstanding Citizen by the Chamber of Commerce; and in 2012, she was chosen as the Senior Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club. Madelyn was known for years as both a devoted teacher and a talented artist.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Fred “Bill” Shelton, brothers and sisters: Curtis, Reeves, Clovis and Fielder Hufstedler and Hazel Savage, a daughter-in-law, Mary Shelton and a great-granddaughter, GraceAnn Johnson.

She is survived by two sons; Fred Shelton of Rogersville, Alabama and Sam (Betsy) Shelton of Lewisburg. Six Grandchildren survive: Angie Datuin of Rogersville, Alabama, Dirk (Tonya) Shelton of Lewisburg, Todd Shelton of Indianapolis, Indiana, Paige (Joe) Liggett of Lewisburg, Tony (Kirsten) Humphrey of Lewisburg and India (Ryan) Johnson of Columbus, Mississippi. Ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson also survive.

Active pallbearers will be Dirk Shelton, Chenney Shelton, Will Datuin, Kyle Robertson, Todd Shelton, Tony Humphrey, Brad Gatlin, Joe Liggett.

Visitation and Funeral will be held Saturday, December 14th at Lewisburg’s First United Methodist Church, 325 W. Church Street. The visitation will begin at 10 AM followed by the service at 2 PM. Burial will be held at the Lone Oak Cemetery in Lewisburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lewisburg’s First United Methodist Church.
