Mr. Moon died Friday afternoon in NHC-Oakwood in Lewisburg.
Born in Christiana, TN, he was the son of the late Dr. James P. and Margaret Windrow Moon, and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, with his long-time membership at the First United Methodist Church of Lewisburg. He served as a Tennessee State Senator, representing Marshall County, from 1951-1952. Active in the community, Mr. Moon was a member and Past President of the Lewisburg Lion's Club. He also served as District Governor for the Lion's Club. He attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and graduated from Middle Tennessee State Teachers' College.
Mr. Moon served as principal, teacher, and coach at Cornersville High School when he first moved to the area. His introduction to business was as Personnel Director of Florence Stove Company, and Director and Vice President of Management with Linton Pencil Company. in 1961, he founded J. R. Moon Pencil Company, which he sold in 1998. He then founded Eraser Products Company in 1976, and Moon Enterprises in 1981. He was a Past President of the Pencil Makers Association and received their hightest honor, the Dave Price Award. He was awarded the Dave McCurrach Award, the most prestigious honor from the National School Supply and Equipment Association. Mr. Moon served the NNSEA on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee.
In recent years, he was twice named the Lewisburg Rotary Club's Outstanding Citizen, as well as being named the Chamber of Commerce's Marshall County Citizen of the Year.
Mr. Moon was preceded in death by the love of his life for over 63 years, Miriam Harwell Moon in August of this year. He is survived by his two children, Cathie Oldham Davidson and James P. Moon, both of Lewisburg; one brother, Harold P. Moon of Springfield, TN; eight grandchildren, Robert Kenneth Oldham,II, Andrew Gordon Oldham, John Clarke Oldham, Daniel Harwell Oldham, James Brevard 'Bo' Oldham, Anne Braden Blasdel, Mary Catherine Moon, and James Robert 'Jase' Moon; and 7 graet-grandchildren.
The family requets that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 325 W. Church St, Lewisburg, TN 37091.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Lewisburg Lion's Club.
